Can I use a mild cream facial cleanser in order to clean my sterling silver ring?

Well, first of all......my ring is very cheap. It is sterling silver, and has a couple stones (but definitely fake) and currently has no tarnish at all. I know you may ask why I go to such trouble for such a cheap ring, but it was given to me by someone really close to me.....so I really want to keep its pretty glow and shine. So, I heard that you can put it in a mixture of hot water and soap......so I used my mild facial cleanser and used it to clean my ring, then I rinsed it in warm running water. Is this ok? and would it tarnish......if in contact with water? Any suggestions?
